The two categories

Moss Moss is run in two categories on speedrun.com. Any% ends when you become the Moss Prince: the crown run, which is the item on screen 4-1 that unlocks the double jump. Fully Mossed ends at the completion ending instead — all 32 leaves and all 15 spirits, then the secret exit at the top of 5-1 and the spirit elevator. Both are timed in real time, and every run on the leaderboard has video proof attached.

Current records, verified as of 1 November 2026

Every time below is read from the verified speedrun.com leaderboard, with the date the run was set. The list is the top six in each category rather than the full board, so that a route change or a new record is obvious when you compare it against the site.

What the world layout means for a route

The map decides most of it. The world is 8 screens wide and 4 screens deep, you start on screen 4-3, and the crown sits on 4-1 — two screens to the left. Any% is therefore a short trip toward the crown rather than a tour of the world. Fully Mossed cannot take that shortcut: every one of the 32 screens holds exactly one leaf, so a completion run has to touch all 32 screens at least once, and three of them hold a spirit that is stored as a hidden tile (7-1, 1-3 and 6-3). That is also why the two categories sit so close at the top of the board: the same runner holds both records, and the completion run is only about a minute slower than the crown run.

What the collectible sweep actually costs

Comparing the same runner in both categories is the clearest measure. theflumphlord has 10:47 in Any% and 11:38 in Fully Mossed, a gap of 51 seconds; Grinsekotze has 8:50 and 10:45, a gap of 1 minute 55 seconds. For a runner who already has the movement, the sweep costs one to two minutes. For a first completion it costs far more, because route knowledge is what turns 32 separate room visits into one continuous line.

What to practise first

Movement is the limit long before route knowledge is. Learn the distance of a standing jump, a running jump, and a jump that ends in a dash, then practise linking them without stopping. The dash is the tool that makes the short lines possible, and the crown's double jump changes which ledges exist at all, so a route learned before the crown will not survive contact with the second half of the run. Click inside the game canvas before you start so a missing input does not read as a missed jump.

Where the route notes come from

The developer's own devlog collects the community resources: a full map credited to potaterhands, a 100% guide video, and the speedrun.com page. The full-map guide on this site adds something those do not: the exact screen and tile position of every leaf, every spirit and the crown, read from the cartridge's map layer. That is the part you need to plan a sweep of 32 screens rather than follow a video frame by frame.

Submitting a run

Record the whole run, upload it somewhere public, and submit it to speedrun.com/mossmoss with the category and the date. The board verifies every submission and a run without video is not accepted, so start the recording before the first input and keep it running through the ending.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Moss Moss world record?+

As of 1 November 2026 the verified records are 6:36.10 in Any% (set 13 July 2026) and 7:35.93 in Fully Mossed (set 27 July 2026), both held by potaterhands on speedrun.com.

What counts as Any% in Moss Moss?+

Any% ends when you become the Moss Prince, which is the crown run on screen 4-1 that unlocks the double jump. It does not require the collectibles or the completion ending.

What counts as Fully Mossed?+

Fully Mossed requires all 32 leaves and all 15 spirits, then the secret exit at the top of 5-1 and the spirit elevator. The leaderboard lists it as a separate category from Any%.

How long does a Moss Moss speedrun take?+

Top runners finish Any% in about 6 to 9 minutes and Fully Mossed in about 7 to 11 minutes. A first completion without route knowledge usually takes far longer, and a casual full run can take well over half an hour.

Do I need the crown to finish Fully Mossed?+

Yes in practice. The crown grants the double jump, and at least one of the 15 spirits is reached by heading left from the crown area with it. The crown is on screen 4-1.

Where do I submit a Moss Moss run?+

At speedrun.com/mossmoss, in the Any% or Fully Mossed category. Runs are timed in real time and need video proof covering the whole run.
